Excuse me, While I Slip Into Something More Comfortable

Boots.

Just thinking about that word congers up that famous bass guitar riff devised by famous session musician Carol Kaye, of the internationally famous Wrecking Crew. You know Carol’s work. She created the most famous part of Nancy Sinatra’s pop tune, “These Boots Were Made for Walking.” You know, the chords that come after Nancy Sinatra  growls, “These boots are gonna walk over you.” I found the link to the short clip Ms. Sinatra posted on her website here. Ms. Daughter-of-the-Chairman-of-the -Board’s recording of her iconic song turns 50 this year. Ironically this birthday comes at the same time we are  uploading to Air Canada’s in-flight entertainment system (Search for CanadianMade)  our refreshed two-hour long podcast for Air Canada that includes our story about

Canada’s Cougar Shoe Companycanuck_sleeknylon_white_1

We had a wonderful conversation with Cougar’s President and CEO President Steve Sedlbauer. We talked via SKYPE while he was in his Burlington, Ontario offices.  He explained how his father and uncle created the company, after the company they worked for got them out of Czechoslovakia in 1948, shortly before the communist party took over the country.  He then told me about when the name Cougar was adopted by his company and why.

Sedlbauer says Cougar sells millions of pairs of boots to places all over the world, where there’s harsh icy-cold weather. He’s proud that Canada has that rugged terrain and weather reputation, and that people around the globe embrace what his company stands for.  To quote Cougar.com

” Freedom is imagination, aspiration, expectation and perspiration. It’s making
waves and never, ever backing down, especially from a little ill weather. Since
1948 our family has kicked heels, splashed puddles, stomped mud and never taken a step without recognizing just how small we are in this vast and great and
beautiful drift we call home.”

“As a Canadian company, every winter boot we design must conquer the harshest
elements. After all, it’s hard to feel fashionable if you can’t feel your toes. That’s why three generations of our family are still working hard to keep your
family warm, dry and always in style.”
